Backgammon – Three Main Schemes

In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 fundamental plans employed. You must be agile enough to hop between tactics quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time difficulty considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan much improves your circumstances. The better locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this situation!
