Backgammon – Three General Plans

In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 fundamental plans used. You need to be able to hop between tactics almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious calamity considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The better places for anchors are towards your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, considering that you do not have other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
