The Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part One

The goal of a Backgammon match is to shift your pieces around the Backgammon board and get them off the game board faster than your challenger who works just as hard to attempt the same buthowever they move in the opposing direction. Succeeding in a match in Backgammon requires both tactics and luck. Just how far you will be able to move your pieces is up to the numbers from rolling the dice, and how you move your chips are decided on by your overall playing strategies. Enthusiasts use different tactics in the differing stages of a match depending on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Strategy

The goal of the Running Game strategy is to entice all your pieces into your inner board and get them off as fast as you could. This tactic focuses on the speed of advancing your checkers with absolutely no time spent to hit or block your competitor’s pieces. The best time to use this technique is when you believe you might be able to shift your own pieces quicker than the opposing player does: when 1) you have less chips on the game board; 2) all your pieces have moved beyond your opponent’s chips; or 3) your opponent doesn’t use the hitting or blocking strategy.

The Blocking Game Technique

The primary aim of the blocking plan, by its name, is to stop your competitor’s checkers, temporarily, while not worrying about moving your chips quickly. After you’ve established the barrier for your competitor’s movement with a couple of pieces, you can shift your other checkers rapidly from the board. The player will need to also have a clear strategy when to extract and move the pieces that you employed for blocking. The game gets intriguing when your competitor uses the same blocking tactic.
