Backgammon – Three Basic Techniques

[ English ]

In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 main plans used. You need to be agile enough to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might manage, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in big-time trouble considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better places for anchors are near your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: after all, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have other extra pieces to shift! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
