The Essential Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part Two

As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a game of talent and good luck. The goal is to move your checkers safely around the board to your home board and at the same time your opposing player moves their pieces toward their inside board in the opposing direction. With opposing player chips moving in opposite directions there is bound to be conflict and the requirement for specific techniques at specific instances. Here are the last two Backgammon tactics to round out your game.

The Priming Game Plan

If the goal of the blocking tactic is to hamper the opponents ability to shift her pieces, the Priming Game tactic is to absolutely block any movement of the opponent by assembling a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s pieces will either get bumped, or result a bad position if she ever attempts to leave the wall. The ambush of the prime can be setup anyplace between point 2 and point 11 in your half of the board. After you have successfully assembled the prime to prevent the movement of the opponent, your competitor does not even get a chance to roll the dice, that means you shift your checkers and roll the dice again. You’ll win the game for sure.

The Back Game Tactic

The goals of the Back Game tactic and the Blocking Game tactic are similar – to hinder your opponent’s positions hoping to improve your chances of winning, but the Back Game technique utilizes seperate tactics to achieve that. The Back Game tactic is frequently employed when you are far behind your opponent. To participate in Backgammon with this technique, you need to hold 2 or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single piece) late in the game. This tactic is more challenging than others to use in Backgammon seeing as it requires careful movement of your chips and how the pieces are moved is partially the result of the dice toss.
