Backgammon – 3 Basic Strategies

In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 main tactics employed. You must be agile enough to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious dire straits taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be used when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: besides, there’s no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
